Topology maintenance in NG9-1-1 data
March 16, 2026
Developing multiple-feature class datasets for use in spatial analytics and or to meet an operational need such as geo-spatial call routing in NG9-1-1 requires topological consistency.
Managing topology with typical feature-based editing is insufficient in terms of efficiency and quality outcome. Consider the level of effort in resolving a boundary overlap and gap condition across a shared edge between the PSAP, fire, law, and medical boundaries and their relationship to road centerline features and ask yourself; “Is it more efficient to perform twelve basic operations to resolve a dozen slivers, or to manipulate hundreds to thousands of vertices through feature based editing”?
GIS professionals know that it’s imperative to have a topology engine that not only identifies slivers (gaps and or overlaps) but be able to resolve slivers topologically rather than through a feature based editing process.
Gistic Research’s GIVE solution is the only SaaS NG9-1-1 system that equips such a topological engine to date and it differentiates intra-layer from inter-layer topology when it comes to quality, discovery and resolution.
In topology maintenance, GIVE provides both road network and polygon validation and editing, both very important capabilities. This opens the door and helps to ensure current and future spatial analytics is artifact free.
