Introducing GIVE’s New Legacy Sync Feature: A Personal Perspective on Simplifying MSAG, ALI and Road Centerline and Address Point Synchronization
December 2, 2024
As someone who has spent years working with various products to synchronize Master Street Address Guide (MSAG) records with GIS road centerline data, I can tell you firsthand that this process has always been painstakingly tedious. Traditional approaches to this task are time-consuming and depending on the applications approach, painful. One of the biggest challenges lies in trying to visualize the relationship between MSAG records and road centerline features. GIVE’s new Legacy Sync feature was created to address this shortcoming, delivering a much-needed solution that simplifies and accelerates this critical task.
While GIVE is designed for GIS professionals, we’ve put a lot of effort into making GIS concepts more accessible for those that aren’t. Our goal is to support those with basic skills as well. Legacy Sync’s design keeps simplicity in mind, ensuring that anyone can visualize and manage MSAG and road centerline alignment just as efficiently.
Key Benefits of GIVE’s Legacy Sync: A User-Friendly Solution for a Complex Task
1. Visual Clarity with Ideograms Legacy Sync’s relational diagram and interface address one of the most frustrating parts of this process: the inability to easily visualize data relationships. Traditionally, trying to confirm if an MSAG record matches up with road centerline data has been an abstract exercise. GIVE’s Legacy Sync feature changes this by clearly showing the relationship between MSAG data and road centerline features that comprise a route. For instance, if there are several road centerline segments for say, “Main Street,” Legacy Sync groups them together as a single route and overlays this information onto a visual representation of the corresponding MSAG record being reviewed.
2. Intuitive, One-Click Adjustments From my experience, adjusting low and high address ranges to match road centerline routes used to require multiple steps, often with no feedback from the user interface. With Legacy Sync, users can synchronize MSAG ranges with a single click directly within the Sync interface. This single-step adjustment is a game-changer, saving both time and effort, and eliminates errors due to manual data entry. Now, users can easily review and maintain alignment between MSAG records and road centerline data, even if they aren’t GIS professionals.
3. Comprehensive Change Tracking for MSAG Records Another key feature of GIVE’s Legacy Sync is its ability to log every edit, creating a complete history of all changes. Users will be able to generate detailed reports of any modifications made to MSAG and or ALI records, making it easier to keep MSAG coordinators informed and up-to-date. This functionality is particularly valuable, as it not only supports accurate data management but also provides an audit trail.
